Petrovietnam and Sembcorp promote energy transformation in Vietnam

On 19th July 2022, at the headquarters of Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group (Petrovietnam), Chairman of the Board of Directors Hoang Quoc Vuong had a meeting and worked with Mr. Wong Kim Yin - General Director of Sembcorp Group (Singapore).

Attending the meeting on Sembcorp’s side were Mr. Jaya Ratnnam - Singapore Ambassador to Vietnam; Mr. Koh Chiap Khiong - General Director of Sembcorp Southeast Asia; Ms. Pham Thu Hang - General Director of Vietstar Training and Consulting Joint Stock Company, Director of Vietnam - Singapore High Level Forum; with the leaders of Sembcorp’s divisions. On the side of Petrovietnam, there was Mr. Bui Minh Tien - member of the Board of Directors; Mr. Pham Tien Dzung - Vice President; Mr. Nguyen Duy Giang - Deputy General Director of Petrovietnam Power Corporation (PV Power); together with representing leaders of the Group’s Divisions/ Administration Office. 


Overview of the meeting

At the meeting, Mr. Wong Kim Yin - Sembcorp General Director thanked Petrovietnam’s leaders for their interest and facilitation in recent years so that Sembcorp researched cooperation opportunities with Petrovietnam and its subsidiaries. In particular, Petrovietnam has supported Sembcorp as the investor of Dung Quat 2 gas power plant project in the Ca Voi Xanh (Blue Whale) project chain. 

On the occasion, Sembcorp’s leaders introduced some areas of Sembcorp’s activities. Sembcorp was focusing on promoting the development of the renewable energy sector. With its capacity and experience, Sembcorp expressed its desire to seek cooperation opportunities with Petrovietnam and its subsidiaries: Cooperation in the development of renewable electricity (wind and solar power; take advantage of existing renewable energy farms and optimize output); Improve the efficiency and reliability of the power system; Technology and capacity transfer. 

On behalf of Petrovietnam’s leaders, Chairman Hoang Quoc Vuong thanked and highly appreciated Sembcorp’s activities in contribution to promoting energy transformation in Vietnam.

At the meeting, Petrovietnam Chairman Hoang Quoc Vuong shared with Sembcorp’s leaders about the overview of Petrovietnam’s activities and development strategy in the coming time. Petrovietnam aimed to become a leading energy group in the country and in the region, prioritize the expansion and development of sustainable clean energy sources for the country such as natural gas/LNG, offshore wind power, hydrogen and green ammonia; contribute towards the big goal of the Government of Vietnam in implementing the commitment to net zero emissions by 2050. 

According to Chairman Hoang Quoc Vuong’s emphasis, the year 2023 marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Singapore, an important development in the strategic relationship between Vietnam and Singapore, and is also an opportunity for Vietnamese and Singaporean businesses to promote bilateral relations and raise the strategic relationship.

Petrovietnam’s leader hoped that in the coming time, Sembcorp and Petrovietnam would continue to research and seek cooperation opportunities in projects to develop offshore wind power farms, connect ASEAN power grids, develop green hydrogen and energy storage to stabilize the power grid, bring benefits to both sides, and actively contribute to strengthening the cooperation between Vietnam and Singapore.
